2010 PPPCA 8th National Specialty – Something for Everyone

The PPPCA National Specialty, held July 24, 2010 in Cincinnati, OH,
was a fun, informative and friendly competitive event. Alecia
Weber, Patricia and Kirk Weber, and Sue Rexford did an outstanding job
of organizing the event and providing wonderful trophies for the proud
winners. The Queen City Dog Training Club was a perfect, and cool
location given the near 100-degree outdoors temperature, for the annual
gathering of Portuguese Podengo Pequenos from all over the United States.
Participants joined from states as close as Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois,
but as far away as New England, Oklahoma and Colorado. PPPCA folks
are truly a committed bunch! 40 Podengo Pequenos were present, 24 in the
conformation event, others in demonstrations, and some as visitors and
participants in ringside mentoring and the Judges seminar.
The day kicked off with a wonderful demonstration of little Podengos
doing Rally and Agility. Special thanks to Susan Yates and Suzanne
Farney for making that happen. All eyes, human and canine, watched
as their dogs ran the courses. They proved that these little dogs
really can do anything that is asked of them.
Susan Geers-Meiners conducted a Junior Handling Clinic for our youngest
competitors. Some practiced their handling skills for fun, but several
juniors ended up putting their newly honed skills to work as they showed
their dogs in the ring later than morning, some for the first time. The
kids were all very professional and attentive and took their lesson very
seriously.
Mr. Robert E. Fetter judged the Puppy Sweepstakes and Special Show
(Best Born and Bred in the USA), while Mrs. R. Ellen Fetter judged Conformation,
Veteran, Stud Dog and Brood Bitch classes. One of the highlights
of the day was the Judge Educational Seminar conducted by Kip Bergstrom.
He presented to a packed room of Podengo owners and judges. He gave
an historical summary of the breed, discussed their purpose, physical
appearance, temperament and aptitude. Kip used a colorful and picture-packed
PowerPoint presentation to supplement his lecture.
Once tired dogs (and children) were safely stowed back at the host
hotel, it was time for a little relaxation and fun. A Silent Auction,
organized by Bob Brawders and Teresa Knox, provided participants the opportunity
to bid and win fun dog oriented merchandise. President Marilyn Piurek
led the Annual Meeting, the cocktail hour and dinner proved to be a nice
counterpoint to the more hectic morning, and people made new friends and
vowed to see each other at next year’s Specialty!
A big thanks to everyone involved. You all made it possible and it
was entertaining, educational and a great success. Congratulations
to all of the winners! See you next year!
